Two people have been taken to hospital after a chemical spill at a school in Birmingham.

It happened in the science laboratory at Hodge Hill College on Monday morning, before pupils arrived, Birmingham City Council said.

The spill is believed to have involved a small amount of bromine, a corrosive halogen.

Two members of staff were taken to Heartlands Hospital as a precaution, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

Ten others were checked at the scene, but did not need hospital treatment.

A spokesman said the school was closed, but was expected to open as normal on Tuesday.
