A mother has denied killing her two-year-old son through methadone poisoning.

Kelly Emery, 32, pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of Fenton Hogan, who was found collapsed at his home in Cotswold Close, Frankley, Birmingham, in July last year.

Ms Emery, of Gravelly Hill, Erdington, also denied a further charge of child cruelty at Birmingham Crown Court.

A trial, set to last up to five days, was scheduled to begin on 25 February.

A post-mortem examination found Fenton died of methadone poisoning.

The child cruelty charge against Ms Emery alleges she wilfully assaulted, ill-treated, neglected or abandoned her son between 1 March and 30 June last year.

Ms Emery spoke only to confirm her name and enter her pleas during the brief hearing.
