A couple responsible for caring for the woman's baby brother have appeared in court charged with his murder.

Santino Balaz, aged 15 months, died after being taken to hospital on 1 January following an 999 call from his home in Brighton Road, Balsall Heath.

His sister Tereza Lackova, 19, and her partner Marek Holub, 27, appeared before Birmingham magistrates earlier.

The couple, also of Brighton Road, were remanded into custody and will appear at the city's crown court on Thursday.

The baby, a Czech national, was found to have "extensive injuries and fractures to several areas of his body", Det Insp Justin Spanner of West Midlands Police said.

Santino's mother is thought to have returned to the Czech Republic last September.

West Midlands Police are liaising with colleagues in the Czech Republic to trace her.

A post-mortem examination is to be carried out later, police said.
