Sandwell girl attack: Man arrested over kidnap attempt

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to kidnap a nine-year-old girl in the West Midlands.

The girl was returning home, when she was attacked on Belmont Road, Bearwood, just after 13:30 BST on Sunday, West Midlands Police said.

She was dragged into an alley, but a woman heard her cries and came to help her, prompting the man to run off, officers said.

A 37-year-old has been arrested and is currently being questioned.

"The young girl was extremely upset by the attack, but fortunately she wasn't seriously injured," Det Insp Ronan Tyrer said.

"She has been very brave and given us a detailed description of the man who attacked her.

"We have done extensive searches of the area and spoken to local residents and as a result of our inquiries we have arrested a 37-year-old local man this afternoon. "

Det Insp Tyrer described it as an "isolated incident" and called for anyone with information to contact officers.
