A man accused of stabbing a pregnant woman has appeared in court.

Babur Karamat Raja, 41, from Sutton Coldfield, is likely to face trial in August, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Raja was arrested last month in the Trinity Hill area of Sutton Coldfield after a woman suffered multiple wounds to her abdomen.

He has yet to enter a plea to two counts of attempted murder and one of attempted child destruction.

The defendant appeared by video-link from HMP Birmingham and spoke only to give his name and confirm that he could see and understand the hearing.

His alleged victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was in court.

Judge Mark Wall QC remanded Raja in custody until a further preparatory hearing on 23 May.
