A "controlling" husband who tried to kill his wife with a ceremonial sword before claiming she was injured by a burglar has been jailed for 19 years.

Harjit Singh struck her over the head with the weapon and tried to strangle her on 22 October last year.

The 46-year-old, of Edward Street, West Bromwich, was convicted of attempted murder at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The court heard his victim was left with a fractured skull, cuts and a damaged windpipe after the attack.

But she initially went along with his burglary story, fearing she would be deported if Singh was jailed, West Midlands Police said.

The force said the pair had argued about money, and Singh had a "controlling" influence over his wife.

After the sentencing, Det Insp Jason McMahon said: "Despite being scared she was brave enough to tell us what happened and Singh will now be behind bars for a long time."
