Health and safety officer sacked in fire hazard dispute

A drug charity's health and safety officer was sacked after pointing out fire hazards, her union has claimed.

Unite said Alison Morris was dismissed from Birmingham-based CGL after telling managers the building may have to close if broken fire alarms were not fixed within 24 hours.

The union is calling for the immediate reinstatement of the drugs referral worker.

CGL confirmed a member of staff had been dismissed.

Ms Morris, who held a team leader role at the charity, carried out a joint inspection with a fire brigade officer at the centre's office in January, according to Unite, and fire alarms were found not to be working.

The union's regional officer Caren Evans said she had been treated in the "most horrendous way by a draconian management" and should be praised for trying to protect colleagues.

In a statement, CGL said: "This matter is subject to appeal and, as such, we are unable to comment further on the details of the case at this point.

"CGL takes its responsibilities as an employer seriously, with robust policies and procedures in place to ensure staff are treated fairly.

"The safety and wellbeing of staff and our service users is our absolute priority and something we rightly invest considerable resources and effort into getting right."
