'Major' child abuse probe in Alum Rock after man arrested

A "major" child abuse investigation has been launched in Birmingham after a man was charged with making indecent images of children.

Police have been carrying out house-to-house enquiries in Alum Rock following a search of 72-year-old Brian Topliss' home.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 22 June.

Officers' "immediate priority" is establishing if he had any contact with children over the "last few decades".

Police have been carrying out a "full-scale search" of his home on Maitland Road home over the last 48 hours and have seized "various pieces" of computer equipment.

After analysing the devices, officers were sent to the area to speak to members of the community.

Det Ch Insp Dawn Miskella said: "I understand these developments will cause alarm in the community and that's why we have police out in the area today speaking to residents.

"I want to reassure those in and around Maitland Road that we have specially trained officers on hand to support anyone who comes forward to speak to me and my team."
