A man was killed when he was hit by a car being pursued by police in Birmingham.

The man was struck by a dark-coloured Ford Mondeo in Belgrave Middleway just after 23:40 BST on Sunday.

West Midlands Police said the car had been pursued from Short Heath Road, in Erdington, after the driver had failed to stop for officers.

The force said the pursuit had been started by response officers and then continued by specialist traffic police.

It was abandoned when the car went through a red light shortly before the pedestrian was struck, the force said.

Belgrave Middleway was closed in both directions between Bristol Road and Haden Circus as emergency services and collision reconstruction experts investigated, but it reopened fully by 13:00 BST.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been informed.
