An 80-year-old man has died after being hit by a car that police believe was used in a theft 10 minutes before the collision.

The victim died in hospital on Friday - two days after the crash in Walsall.

West Midlands Police has released an image of a car that it says struck the unnamed man in a suspected hit-and-run.

A 41-year-old man who appeared in court on Friday to face a range of related charges has been remanded in custody.

'Extensive damage'

Police believe the Mercedes car was involved in a theft at a petrol station in Ablewell Street at about 10:50 BST on Wednesday before hitting a man on Lichfield Road about 10 minutes later.

The car was found abandoned in Brundard Close, Blakenall, Walsall, at about 14:40 the same day, with, the force says, "extensive windscreen damage" that would have been "distinctive".

Police have appealed for witnesses and wish to speak to motorists who may have dashboard camera footage of the vehicle in transit.

Officers are supporting the family of the man who, the force confirmed, died on Friday afternoon.

When the 41-year-old man, of no fixed abode, appeared in court on Friday, he was accused, police said, of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and having no insurance.
