Boy arrested over Elston Hall Primary School roof fire

An 11-year-old boy has been arrested over a fire at a primary school in Wolverhampton.

West Midlands Police were called to reports of a break-in at Elston Hall Primary School, Stafford Road, at about 2010 BST on Monday.

When they arrived they found a rapidly spreading fire in the school roof.

Eight fire and rescue crews brought the flames under control by about 2300 BST. No-one was hurt and an 11-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of arson.

'Professional job'

West Midlands Fire Service said about 15% of the school building was alight when crews arrived.

A spokesman said: "It was a rapidly developing fire when we first arrived and the fast intervention of the initial crews, with breathing apparatus and main jets, held the fire in check and prevented it from spreading.

"Building work should be able to put this right in time for school children to return in about three weeks' time.

"It was very professional and a job well done by the fire crews across the Black Country."
