Freezing weather closes schools in West Midlands

Several schools are closed in the West Midlands due to the freezing weather.

In Birmingham, Baskerville School, Beaufort School and Cottesbrooke Infant School are shut and Harborne Primary School will be closed all week.

Slade Primary School is partly closed, the city council said.

In the Black Country, Kings Hill Primary School in Walsall is shut and Claregate Primary in Tettenhall is partly closed. Four in Sandwell and one in Dudley are affected.

Guns Village Primary and Westminster Special School in West Bromwich are shut along with Causeway Green in Oldbury and Temple Meadow in Cradley Heath.

Snow spreading

Kings Hill Primary School in Dudley is closed due to a heating problem, the council said.

BBC weatherman Alex Deakin said it would be bitterly cold with a "bone chilling wind" across the whole of the country.

The UK has been experiencing the earliest widespread snowfall since 1993.

The Met Office said snow showers would spread across the West Midlands from the North East on Tuesday morning, leading to a covering of 2 to 5cm (0.7 to 1.9in) in places and up to 10cm (3.9in) over higher ground.
