Troops from 3rd Battalion The Rifles have marched through Wakefield, as they were granted the Freedom of the City.

Hundreds of people were in the town on Saturday to see the soldiers, whose regiment suffered heavy casualties in a recent tour of Afghanistan.

The regiment was presented with the honour by the Mayor of Wakefield Councillor Tony Wallis.

The parade was inspected by the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Dr Ingrid Roscoe, who took the salute.

The 3 Rifles troops returned from Afghanistan in April after a tour which saw 30 soldiers killed in a 1,400-strong battle group which also included The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Dozens more were injured.
