A man has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries after his car crashed into a lamppost in Avonmouth, near Bristol.

Emergency services were called to St Andrew's Way in the city just after 1800 GMT.

A police spokesman said the driver lost control of his vehicle on a bend and collided with the lamppost.

Great Western Ambulance Service said the man was taken to Frenchay Hospital with multiple injuries.

The driver had been trapped inside the vehicle.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

The A403 St Andrew's Road, between St Andrew's Gate roundabout and Severn Road, was expected to be closed for most of Friday evening while police collision investigators examined the scene.
