Accidents see M4 closed and M5 blocked in Bristol

Two separate accidents on motorways around Bristol caused long delays for morning commuters.

The M4 eastbound between junction 19 (M32) and 18 (Bath) was closed after an accident between four vehicles. A woman suffered serious head injuries.

The incident, which happened at 0750 GMT, saw 20 miles of congestion.

Meanwhile on the M5 northbound between junction 17 (Cribbs Causeway) and 18a (M49), three lanes were closed after a five car pile-up.

Great Western Ambulance Service said a woman who was in labour and on her way to Southmead Hospital had to be escorted off the M5 after becoming stuck in the queue.

A police spokesman said a woman was injured on the M4 when her red Nissan Micra hit the central barrier after colliding with other vehicles.

He said the Micra was in collision with a Ford Transit van and pushed into the side of a Nissan van. The woman was taken to hospital.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
