University of Bristol awarded £2m for brain research

An academic from the University of Bristol has been awarded more than £2m for a research project into the brain.

Dr Matt Jones won the grant from the Medical Research Council.

The university said the project would focus on the "neural basis of learning, memory and decision-making in health and disease."

The money will also go towards funding a joint study at Cardiff University looking at schizophrenia risk genes to design new therapies for the disease.

Dr Jones said: "Your brain is constantly doing sums, weighing-up past experience and the current situation in order to decide how best to behave.

"Unfortunately, patients with diseases like schizophrenia have trouble coping with these decisions that most take for granted."

Referring to the joint project with Cardiff University, he said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to unite the internationally recognised strengths of Cardiff and Bristol's geneticists and neuroscientists."
