Bristol University gets machine for dementia research

Bristol University is to carry out research into the causes of dementia with a new gene analysis machine.

Alzheimer's Research UK has helped pay for the equipment with a £48,000 grant.

It will allow scientists to measure how much various genes contribute to the levels of two proteins found in the brain of people with Alzheimer's.

Senior research fellow Dr Pat Kehoe said: "We desperately need this new equipment to support our latest projects."

He added grant was "being used to replace an old machine that has sadly become obsolete".

In the UK, one in 14 people over the age of 65 has Alzheimer's disease.
