A new gym for aspiring Olympic and Paralympic athletes has been officially opened.

The £100,000 performance gym is an extension to the University of Bath's existing fitness suite.

Student and swimmer Michael Jamieson said it was a "significant improvement" on the previous gym.

It was opened by deputy vice-chancellor Kevin Edge, Olympic skeleton gold medallist Amy Williams, Mr Jamieson and modern pentathlete Freyja Prentice.

The gym, which enables the athletes to work on their strength and conditioning, was developed and funded by the university, the English Institute of Sport, Sport England, UK Sport and the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme.
