Jewellery thefts rise in Avon and Somerset police region

Police in the Avon and Somerset area have seen a recent increase in the theft of jewellery and cash from homes, the force has said.

A spokeswoman said it was thought the thefts were due to the "soaring" value of gold in the past 12 months.

She urged people to place valuable items in a safe and keep large amounts of cash in a bank.

The number of burglaries overall in the region has fallen in the last six months, she added.

She attributed the decrease to actions including extra patrols and monitoring prolific offenders.

The force operates in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Somerset.
