A woman has died in hospital after being trapped underneath a forklift truck at a cash and carry distribution centre in Bristol.

Police said the incident happened at Booker in Avonmouth at 12:30 GMT on Monday. The woman, who was aged in her 40s, died later at Frenchay Hospital.

In a statement a Booker spokesperson said it was a "tragic accident".

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed and Avon and Somerset Police are investigating.

'Full investigation'

"We are currently working closely with the police and all relevant authorities to ensure a full investigation. Our thoughts are with the family," the statement from Booker added.

A spokesman for Great Western Ambulance Service said the woman, who it said was a staff member at the store, had been trapped underneath the forklift.

A spokeswoman from Bristol City Council said: "We can confirm that Bristol City Council health and safety inspectors are investigating a fatal accident that happened at Booker Limited's premises in Avonmouth, Bristol.
