Chipping Sodbury Waitrose building 'to start by summer'

Building work on a new Waitrose supermarket in Chipping Sodbury near Bristol could begin by next summer.

Detailed plans are due to be submitted to South Gloucestershire Council next month. Outline planning permission was granted last summer.

Developer Chelverton Deeley Freed wants to build a store on the Barnhill Quarry site near the town centre.

The scheme was criticised by some who said it would take trade away from shops, while others backed it.

Paddy Fox, director of Chelverton Deeley Freed, said construction would begin after detailed planning consent was awarded.

"A detailed application will be going in in the first two weeks of January," he said. "Work is likely to start in the summer."

A poll of residents, carried out by Sodbury Town Council last summer, showed 435 people were against the scheme, while 393 supported it.

Outline planning permission was approved in June by South Gloucestershire Council, subject to a section 106 agreement, in which a developer agrees to provide community facilities in return for planning permission.
