Bristol motorway closure warning issued

Work to improve a stretch of motorway near Bristol will mean night closures for the next two weeks, the Highways Agency has warned.

The M4 will shut westbound between junctions 19 and 22 from 22:00 GMT until 06:00 on Thursday and Friday, and eastbound on Saturday.

A westbound closure then takes place from 16 to 18 January.

The closures are part of an £88.6m scheme to create a "managed motorway" similar to the M42 in Birmingham.

The managed motorway scheme planned for both the M4 and M5 around Bristol will use variable speed limits and the hard shoulder to ease congestion.

Contractors working on the scheme have written to residents living near the motorway to assure them that noisy work would be carried out earlier in the night.

Another further eastbound closure is planned for three nights between 19 and 21 January.

Construction is due to be complete by 2014.
