Weston-super-Mare parking changes proposed

New parking restrictions are being proposed for Weston-super-Mare which could see meters introduced on some residential roads.

North Somerset Council wants to charge £1.20 an hour on roads near the town centre with a two hour maximum stay.

The authority is also planning to reduce charges at off-street car parks to £1 an hour.

A report, which will be considered by the council on Tuesday, said parking around the centre was "under strain".

Visitors 'put off'

"These spaces present premium parking opportunities close to shops but poor management means that time limits are not observed and turnover of spaces is poor," council officers added.

"Businesses have complained that shoppers find it difficult to find a space and are put off visiting Weston."

The parking zone would operate from 09:00 until 18:00 from Monday to Saturday.

Residents would be offered parking permits costing £62 per year giving them an hour of free parking in the morning and afternoon.

Another proposal from the council could see the Grove Street car park extended into an adjoining redundant tennis court.
