A fire at a building believed to be used by homeless people has led to the closure of a major road in the centre of Bristol.

Fire crews were called to the A38 at Stokes Croft, close to the St James Barton roundabout, at around 03:00 BST.

The three-storey building was badly damaged in the blaze.

Fire investigators are waiting for the building to be made safe before going in.

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said there were concerns over the stability of the building.

"Scaffolding is going up during the course of the day but our overriding concern is making sure the public are safe," the brigade spokesman said.

He added it was not possible to know when the road would re-open.
