Avon and Somerset police sergeant charged with rape

A police sergeant has appeared in court charged with rape, sexual assault, false imprisonment and actual bodily harm.

Peter Lower, 51, of Avon and Somerset Constabulary, is currently suspended from duty.

Bristol Magistrates Court heard Sgt Lower faces 17 counts alleged to have taken place between February to November 2009.

He was bailed to appear at the city's crown court on 7 April.

The force said the charges related to one woman and were not connected to Sgt Lower's professional role as a police officer.

He faces three counts each of rape and sexual assault, five actual bodily harm charges, and one false imprisonment allegation.
