Council warns over Huntingdonshire telephone scam

Warnings have been issued after reports of a telephone scam where Huntingdonshire residents have been told they are due a council tax rebate.

The district council said it had received reports of bogus callers, claiming to be council employees.

The caller then asks for bank details in order for the money to be refunded into the council taxpayer's account.

The council urged residents who receive a suspicious call to note the details and report it to police.

Julia Barber, head of customer services at the council, said: "At no time would council staff ask for bank details or money to be paid over the phone in order to get a refund and under no circumstances should they be given to people who phone up."
