Ely drugs den closed down by police

Police in Cambridgeshire have closed down a home being used as a drugs den.

Officers carried out three warrants since 2008 at the property in Nene Road, Ely, where they found drugs, scales, a debt sheet and used needles.

The site is near The Lantern Primary School and the City of Ely Community College.

Magistrates granted the closure application last week and locks were changed. It is now an offence for anyone to enter the property.

The occupant was sentenced to a community order, but police said they decided to pursue a closure order under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act because of the nuisance to residents living nearby.

Flagship housing association now has three months to process a formal cessation of tenancy and take possession of the property.
