A man with an axe surrendered to police in Cambridgeshire after a two-hour stand-off in a chemist shop surrounded by armed officers on Saturday night.

Police were called to Cliffords Chemists in Godmanchester at 20:45 BST.

A "safe and peaceful" surrender was negotiated at the shop in The Causeway, a police spokesman said.

Police were called when an alarm went off. A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and is in custody.

Police were helped by the force's tactical firearms unit during the incident.

Insp Terry Furlong said: "The incident caused considerable disruption to the area on a busy Saturday night and I thank local residents for their patience while we dealt with this matter.

"The man remains in custody at Huntingdon and investigations are continuing."

Police believe the man smashed his way into the chemist shop using the axe.
