Cambridgeshire travellers sites' purchase backed by council

A council has agreed to purchase three travellers' sites in Cambridgeshire to avert the need to build elsewhere.

South Cambridgeshire District Council agreed to buy the private Fen Road site in Chesterton, as well as two county council sites in Whaddon and Blackwell.

The council will put £850,000 towards the purchase and hopes to receive a further £1.9m in government grants.

The move aims to ensure the needs of the expanding travelling community in the area are met in the future.

Under the deal, the authority would own and manage all of the sites, with Cambridge City Council able to take rent from one of the Fen Road pitches.

Once bought, the sites will be refurbished and extra spaces made available.
