Police have released CCTV pictures of a masked man who used a gun and a knife while trying to rob a petrol station.

The man walked into a Shell station on Whittlesey Road in Peterborough at 22:25 BST on 18 October and demanded cash from the attendant.

The employee ran off to raise the alarm and the man, who tried to break into the tills, fled empty-handed.

Officers hope by showing the footage the public might recognise the gunman's "distinctive clothing".

Cambridgeshire Police said it was "a terrifying ordeal" for the employee.

The offencer was wearing a high-visibility sleeveless jacket over a dark blue hooded top, a face covering, grey gloves, grey tracksuit bottoms and red trainers.

Det Con Kevin Poole said: "While his face is not visible on the CCTV, the offender was wearing very distinctive clothing and I would appeal to anyone who saw him leave the store or recognises the description, to call police."
