Jobless claimant numbers rise slightly in Cornwall

The number of people out of work and claiming benefits in Cornwall rose slightly in September.

The Office of National Statistics said there were 7,256 claimants - a rise of 192 from the previous month.

It is the first rise for seven months, but with a rate of 2.2% it is still below the equivalent UK rate of 3.6%.

Nationally, the claimant count rose by 5,300 to 1.47 million, although unemployment fell by 20,000 to 2.45 million in the three months to August.
