Woman jailed for falsely claiming £53,000 in benefits

A woman from Cornwall has been jailed for 16 months for falsely claiming more than £53,000 in benefits.

Susan Richards, 48, from Centenary Row Middle, Camborne, admitted six charges of dishonestly in relation to claims made between 2001 and 2008.

Sentencing her at Truro Crown Court, Judge Christopher Elwen said the claims had been fraudulent from the start and she had clearly thought about it.

The mother-of-three has since repaid about £2,740, the court heard.

Richards received about £22,500 in income support, £26,000 in housing benefit and £5,300 in council tax benefits.
