Cornish Olympic torchbearers nominations open

Nominations have opened for "inspirational people" to carry the Olympic torch through Cornwall on the first leg of its journey to London.

The Olympic Torch Relay will start at Land's End on 19 May and travel through the UK to reach London on 21 July.

The torch is expected to pass within an hour of 95% of people in the UK.

Leader of Cornwall Council, Alec Robertson, said it was a "once in a lifetime opportunity which will see the eyes of the world fixed on Cornwall".

He said: "I am very proud that Cornwall has been chosen as the starting point for this incredible event and I hope as many people and communities as possible will get involved."

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) said it hopes 50% of the 8,000 torchbearers will be aged between 12 and 24.

Nominations can be made on the London 2012 website before 29 June.

A shortlist of potential torchbearers will be presented to the South West judging panel, which will make a decision by December.
