Beach polo returns to Watergate Bay in Newquay

A popular sporting event is returning to North Cornwall.

The annual Polo on the Beach event at Watergate Bay near Newquay, attracts thousands of spectators.

Last year the 3,000-plus spectators saw appearances from former England internationals, brothers Richard and Andrew Blake Thomas.

Six professional polo players, one umpire and about 30 horses took to the sands at Watergate Bay on Tuesday for four fast-paced chukkas. .

Professional player Richard Blake Thomas, said: "It's just great fun, and gets bigger and better every year.

"This year spectators can expect to see sun, sea, sand, sweat, and sibling rivalry."

The action takes place in a small arena at Watergate Bay measuring 100m by 50m.

Each period of play lasts for six-and-a-half minutes.
