Four rescued from Towan beach in Newquay beach

Newquay lifeboat has rescued four people cut off by the tide at a beach at the town.

The group, believed to be in their 20s, tried to alert the authorities by lighting a fire at the island on Towan beach on Wednesday evening.

A passer-by called 999 when he spotted the fire.

Phil Mathias from Falmouth Coastguards said the group was picked up by the lifeboat and then dropped safely ashore on the slipway at Towan Beach.
