Woman charged over suspected arson in St Austell

A woman has appeared at Truro Magistrates Court charged with committing arson with intent to endanger life.

Karen Broadhurst, 43, of Sylvan Close in St Austell has been remanded in custody until 6 January.

It follows a fire in Sylvan Close on Boxing Day afternoon.

The blaze was discovered by police at about 17:20 GMT and a number of elderly people were led to safety from the properties.

Paramedics treated residents for the effects of smoke inhalation at the scene. Police said no-one was seriously injured in the fire.

During the incident, some of the residents sheltered at the Tregonissey War Memorial Social Club in St Austell.

Sylvan Close is managed by property group Ocean Housing.

No-one from the management company was available to comment.

Ms Broadhurst will appear at Truro Crown Court on 6 January.
