Cornwall Council's warning to fraudsters

People making fraudulent claims in Cornwall are being warned that council officers will track them down.

Cornwall Council already identifies about £1m of fraudulent claims each year.

Officials have said they are set to focus on people wrongly claiming housing tenancy and single person council tax benefits.

Cornwall Council hopes a tougher approach could save Cornish taxpayers hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Neil Kirkland, the Cornwall Council officer responsible for dealing with fraud, said: "We have a near-50 strong team of professionals here who are in place to prevent, detect and investigate fraud.

"If there are people acting fraudulently, one, they should stop but, two, we will be seeking to track them down."
