Cornwall cash machine tampering prompts vigilance alert

Thieves who placed cameras and card reading devices on cash machines in Cornwall are being hunted by police.

People have been warned to be vigilant after officers removed the devices in Launceston, Truro and Penzance, on Sunday.

The cameras record customers' PIN as it is typed into the machine, a Devon and Cornwall police spokesperson said.

Cash machine users are being asked to report anything suspicious to the police.

Inspector Dave Meredith said: "Before inserting your card please check for hidden cameras. Also, check the area housing the card slot for any device that may have been attached to it.

"These incidents are usually linked to sophisticated criminal gangs and they seldom occur in isolation."
