Liskeard egg packing plant closing with 40 job losses
People working at an egg packing plant in Cornwall are to lose their jobs.
The 40 employees at the STC Packers Cornwall Ltd plant at Tremar, near Liskeard, have been told it will close at the end of April.
Staff said bosses blamed the recent EU directive banning the use of traditional battery cages for hens.
The plant is operated by STC Packers, but is believed to be owned by Stonegate. Both companies have declined to comment.
The voluntary EU-wide ban on battery production came into force on 1 January and Stonegate's egg production sheds have already closed, with the loss of 60 jobs.
The final shifts at the egg packing plant will be on 27 April.
One worker, who asked not be named, said news of the closure was unexpected.
"It's come as a horrible surprise to everybody," BBC News was told.
The employee said no-one has been offered redeployment, although consultations were still ongoing.
