RNAS Culdrose helicopter winches man from sea off Looe

A lone yachtsman has been airlifted to hospital after being winched from the sea off Cornwall.

The alarm was raised at about 09:30 BST when Falmouth Coastguard received a signal from a personal locator beacon about five-and-a-half miles off Looe.

Brixham Coastguard said the man is believed to have fallen from his 12m (39ft) yacht Regulus.

An RNAS Culdrose helicopter winched the man to safety and flew him to the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said the sailor is thought to have been in the water for about an hour before he was rescued.

His condition is not known.
