King Charles School in Falmouth has been placed in special measures and has a new interim head teacher after a damning inspection report.

Education watchdog Ofsted rated the school as inadequate overall, the lowest category.

It was also rated inadequate for achievement of pupils, quality of teaching and leadership and management.

Regarding behaviour and safety of pupils, it was told it required improvement.

The report said: "The school does not ensure all pupils achieve as well as they should" and that "teaching is not consistently good enough."

It also said: "The school's overall judgement about its effectiveness has not been accurate," but it adds that pupils are well cared for and feel safe and proud of their school.

Special measures means the school will have regular short-notice Ofsted inspections to monitor its improvement.

Cornwall Council and the governors have brought in interim head Claire Fortey, who is head St Francis School in Falmouth.

Mrs Fortey said: "Whilst this is a challenging time for the school I have every confidence that King Charles has the capacity for rapid and sustained improvement.

"All of the staff, governors and children are working extremely hard on formulating and implementing a focused action plan and I feel privileged to be asked to support the team towards future success."

One parent who did not want to be named, said: "I love this school. I have had three girls here and they all come in happy.

"They have a broad spectrum of education and they come out confident in life skills, not just academic achievements."
