A fire has broken out at a Grade II-listed hotel in Truro.

Six fire appliances and two ladder platforms were called to the Alverton Manor Hotel in Tregolls Road.

A quarter of the hotel's Great Hall, used for conferences and weddings, was damaged by flames and the rest of the hall was smoke damaged, incident commander Guy Herrington said.

Hotel managers said staff got everyone out safely after a "small, isolated fire" was discovered.

Light fitting

A conference was about to start in the hall when staff smelled smoke at about 09:00 GMT.

Fire crews used a thermal imaging camera to locate the seat of the fire and had to hack down plasterboard to ensure no pockets of fire remained.

An investigation has begun into the cause, but it is believed it may have started in an electrical light fitting.

A hotel spokesperson said: "Everyone was evacuated and safe within five minutes and the fire was fully extinguished by 11:30.

"There is a small amount of damage to the Great Hall but all is in hand to have this repaired and back up and running as soon as possible.

"All functions within the next week have been contacted and accommodated at our sister hotels.

"The main hotel building was unaffected."

The 33-bedroom, four-star hotel had recently been refurbished.
