Work on new children's play area in Coventry

Work has started on a new £60,000 children's play area in Coventry.

The Holbrook play area is on a list of nine which were due to be refurbished as part of the government's former Playbuilder scheme in 2010-11.

The Playbuilder initiative originally pledged Coventry £440,120 to revamp the areas, but this was cut to £275,007.

The council said this left a significant shortfall. The government has said the cuts were needed to help reduce the deficit.

Money for the nine sites has been organised from the Playbuilder scheme as well as other sources, including the city council and Heritage Lottery Fund.

In August 2010 council cabinet members voted to go ahead with refurbishing the play areas on a reduced scale.
