Continuing high winds could prevent a steeplejack from inspecting a quarter-tonne weathervane in Coventry that became dislodged in the wind.

The vane at the top of Christchurch spire - now Inspires bar - in New Union Street, was damaged on Monday.

Up to 500 staff were evacuated from nearby buildings and a steeplejack was able to secure the vane overnight.

He was due to return on Tuesday to assess the damage but the council said winds might prevent him from ascending.

A safety cordon remains in place.

Staff from the nearby Christchurch House, Spire House and the Methodist Central Hall were allowed to re-enter their buildings for work on Tuesday, although some areas were off limits, the council said.
