Computer scammers cold-call trading standards officer

Computer scammers cold-called the trading standards department of a West Midlands council.

The principal consumer protection officer for Coventry City Council, Mike Lynn, was called at work by someone claiming his computer was "sending signals to Microsoft".

After a 10-minute call during which he questioned who the caller was and how much they were charging they rang off.

Mr Lynn said: "Even we are not immune from these scammers."

During the call Mr Lynn asked for more details of the company and was given a phone number and an address in Norfolk.

Mr Lynn said he would now be contacting his colleagues in Norfolk Trading Standards to see whether they could help trace who made the call.
