'Major fire' at Hindu temple in Nuneaton

Homes in Nuneaton have been evacuated because of a major fire at a Hindu temple in the town.

About 15 people living near the Shri Hindu Gujarati Samaj temple, on Upper Abbey Street, were taken to a hotel.

Fire crews were called out at about 04:40 GMT. Police have tweeted that smoke was blowing over the carriageway of the nearby Roanne Ringway.

The blaze, which is not thought to be suspicious, has now been brought under control and residents allowed home.

Warwickshire Police said: "A number of local residents were evacuated to the Holiday Inn, Nuneaton, and road closures were in place in Upper Abbey Street, the Roanne Ringway, Queens Road and Corporation Street.

"The fire has now been brought under control by Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, road closures have been lifted and residents allowed to return to their homes."
