The family of a toddler who died after being found in a pond at his mother's home in Cumbria have spoken of their devastation.

Jack Edward Thomas Herd was found unconscious in the pond in Stank, near Barrow, on Friday evening.

His mother and neighbours tried to resuscitate the 23-month-old boy but were unable to.

Police said their enquiries had confirmed it was an accident, and praised his mother and neighbours.

In the statement, Jack's family said: "The family is devastated at the loss of our darling little boy.

"Jack made everybody laugh and brought smiles to the faces of everyone he met..."

Det Ch Insp Jeff Ashton, of Cumbria Police, said: "The police investigation and post-mortem confirmed that this was a tragic accident and the coroner has been informed.

"I would like to pay a special tribute to the neighbours who along with Jack's mother Lucy tried in vain to resuscitate him."
