A massive fire at a Cumbria scrapyard which destroyed about 500 cars and several outbuildings is being treated as suspicious.

It broke out at Fainty's on Cavendish Dock Road in Barrow in the early hours, and at its height eight appliances and 40 fire crews were at the scene.

People living in the area were warned to stay indoors as a precautionary measure due to the thick black smoke.

The fire was put out, and police are treating it as a possible arson.

Roads in the area had been cordoned off, but were later reopened, and people were able to leave their homes.

Police said that although the smoke was not likely to lead to any significant health risks, anyone with symptoms such as throat irritation or respiratory problems should contact NHS Direct or their GP.

Det Sgt John Carton, of Cumbria Police, said: "We have a team of detectives investigating the fire at Fainty's scrapyard and are treating the incident as arson."

He added officers were particularly keen to speak to a group of five youths who were seen in the area at about 2330 BST on Tuesday.
