Driver stopped going wrong way on M6 in Cumbria

A driver faces losing his licence after driving the wrong way on the M6.

Motorists alerted police after he joined the motorway at Penrith, driving south on the northbound carriageway.

Officers set up a rolling roadblock and stopped the 87-year-old, of Lockerbie, near the Shap turnoff after he had driven six miles on Monday evening.

He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and released without further action but will be referred to the DVLA over his licence.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "It will go through the DVLA but he could voluntarily give up his licence."
