Barrow pumping station working after cable thefts

Work has been completed to protect homes in Cumbria from flooding after thieves stole electrical cable from a pumping station.

The station, on Frederick Street, Barrow, keeps rainwater out of about 100 properties, but was put out of action when thieves struck on Tuesday.

United Utilities said engineers worked overnight to restore power.

The company's wastewater network manager, Paul Rigby, described the theft as "dangerous and irresponsible".

He said: "Not only did the thieves put the homes of innocent people at risk they are lucky to be alive.

"Stealing cable which is live is incredibly dangerous."
